Nigerian Senate Confirms Dr. Badamasi Lawal as New CEO of NSIPA

 

The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Dr. Badamasi Lawal as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA). This significant appointment positions Dr. Lawal at the helm of one of the nation's pivotal social welfare institutions.

The decision to confirm Dr. Lawal followed a thorough process. The Senate Committee on Poverty Alleviation and Social Investments reviewed his qualifications and credentials before submitting their report for consideration. The committee, led by Senator Idiat Oluranti Adebule, affirmed that Dr. Lawal met all the necessary legal requirements for the position, paving the way for his endorsement.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio facilitated the final step in the confirmation process by presenting the nomination to the legislative body for a voice vote. The senators gave their approval, solidifying Dr. Lawal's appointment as the new head of NSIPA.

Dr. Lawal's nomination had earlier been put forward by President Bola Tinubu on August 8, 2024. Dr. Lawal comes into this role with a wealth of experience, having previously served as a commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs in Katsina State. Has Betta Edu's Suspension Become Permanent?

 

It has been nine months since President Bola Tinubu suspended Betta Edu, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, following allegations of financial mismanagement. Yet, the investigation into these claims appears to be dragging on without conclusion.

Development Diaries reports that by April, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had not cleared any individuals involved in the corruption investigation at the ministry. 

On multiple occasions, Development Diaries has questioned why both the EFCC and the presidency have failed to provide Nigerians with updates on the progress or findings of the investigation.

The prolonged lack of communication raises serious concerns about the transparency and accountability of President Tinubu’s government, particularly in how it handles corruption allegations.

It's troubling that despite the severity of the accusations and the EFCC's involvement, the public remains uninformed about any developments or conclusions from the investigation.

In July, rumors surfaced that Edu had resumed her official duties despite the suspension, further casting doubt on the administration’s seriousness in tackling corruption.

Additionally, Edu’s use of the ministry’s official letterhead in a condolence message following a building collapse in Jos raised questions among Nigerians about whether her suspension was more symbolic than real.

What is clear is that the continued silence from the EFCC and the presidency only deepens suspicion and weakens public trust in the rule of law.

The government’s failure to provide timely and clear updates on the matter risks further eroding public confidence in President Tinubu’s administration.

Transparency is essential in proving a genuine commitment to combating corruption. Without accountability, the credibility of both the EFCC and the government as a whole is in jeopardy.

Npower News: Permanent Secretary to Address Payment Issues with NSIPA CEO

 

According to Npower News, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has stated that he will raise and address Npower payment concerns with Dr. Badamasi Lawal, the National Coordinator and Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programmes Agency. 

The Permanent Secretary also mentioned that both the Minister of Finance, Budget, and Planning, along with other ministry officials, are fully aware of the delayed Npower payments and are working on resolving the issue. He acknowledged that some Npower beneficiaries have been owed for 8 to 12 months. Although he could not provide a specific timeline for the payments, he assured beneficiaries that the Ministry of Finance is aware of the situation.

FG Launches Portal for Youths to Access 2000 CNG Tricycles

 

The Ministry of Youth Development has launched a dedicated portal to enable Nigerian youths to benefit from the 2000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) tricycles initiative. This was announced by the Minister of State for Youth Development, Comrade Ayodele Olawande, during the portal’s unveiling on Monday in Abuja.

Olawande explained that the portal allows young people from across the country to register and connect with aggregators or CNG tricycle owners under the PiCNG programme, with the aim of eventually owning the tricycles themselves.

He emphasized that this initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s vision of ensuring equal access to government programmes and opportunities for all Nigerians.

"The launch of this youth portal reaffirms our commitment to providing equal access to all our programmes and initiatives," Olawande stated.

He urged Nigerian youths to take advantage of the opportunities offered by the Presidential Initiative on CNG, which forms a key part of President Tinubu’s palliative measures.

Tinubu Urges Ebonyi Students to Utilize Government Student Loan Program

 

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on students in the South East to engage with the federal government's student loan program, designed to mitigate the nation’s economic challenges.

Speaking through Mrs. Chioma Nweze, his Senior Special Assistant on Community Engagement for the South East, Tinubu’s message was delivered during a visit to Ebonyi State University (EBSU). Accompanied by Akintunde Sawyer, Managing Director of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFund), and his team, Nweze underscored the necessity for students to embrace the loan scheme, while also encouraging them to explore research grants, interdisciplinary courses, and community-based activities.

Nweze pointed out that the NELFund initiative aligns with the Tinubu administration’s broader strategy for poverty reduction and economic growth. She urged universities to become hubs of innovation, promoting creativity and progress by encouraging both students and faculty to tap into various development opportunities.

She also emphasized the need to revise academic curricula to prioritize science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) in order to close the technology gap between Nigeria and advanced countries. Nweze suggested that such a focus could help nurture future leaders comparable to figures like Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg, who would play a key role in Nigeria's future development.

"This engagement aims to educate universities and students about the importance of the NELFund, the process for accessing it, and why it should be shared with others," she said. "There’s nothing wrong with taking the loan; we should also seize opportunities for government grants, research funding, and other initiatives. Our universities need to be leaders in this movement."

Akintunde Sanyerr, NELFund’s Managing Director, encouraged students to apply for the interest-free loan, which would be repaid once they secure employment. He reiterated that the student loan program is a fulfillment of President Tinubu’s campaign promises, aimed at enhancing educational opportunities for Nigerian students.

Prof. Chigozie Ogbu, Vice Chancellor of Ebonyi State University, praised the introduction of the student loan, noting that it would help reduce the number of dropouts and contribute to addressing social issues in the country.

The Federal Government has introduced a new loan program through the Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) to offer financial relief to Nigerians impacted by the recent fuel price increases.

CREDICORP, a Development Finance Institution (DFI), was established to broaden access to consumer credit for Nigeria’s working class. The loans are provided through selected financial institutions to help households meet pressing needs and ease financial strain.

In a statement on Monday, CREDICORP said, "This program is part of the government's strategy to address the rising cost of living and offer much-needed assistance during these difficult times."

The Corporation also announced that interested Nigerians can apply for the loan by visiting the CREDICORP website at http://www.credicorp.ng.

At present, civil servants are the main recipients of the program, but plans are underway to extend it to the general public.

CREDICORP revealed that “over 10,942 civil servants across various sectors have already benefitted, including 4,786 education staff, 1,307 healthcare workers, 753 specialized professionals, 1,264 police and paramilitary personnel, and 2,831 administrative officers.”

One beneficiary, Mrs. Hauwa Bawa from the Ministry of Labour and Productivity, shared her experience: “I secured my loan without knowing anyone. I applied online, and the funds were quickly disbursed. It helped me with my small farm and other urgent household needs. I’m deeply grateful to CREDICORP and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.”

This loan initiative arrives at a crucial moment as Nigerians face skyrocketing fuel prices.

In September 2024, the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation increased fuel prices from N568 to N897 per litre, with some stations charging up to N1,000.

This price hike has triggered an increase in the cost of essential goods, worsening the already high inflation rate, now standing at 34.19%.

The statement further explained, "CREDICORP’s mission is built on three core pillars: developing the infrastructure to strengthen Nigeria’s consumer credit system, ensuring all economically active citizens have comprehensive credit scores; providing capital and credit guarantees to financial institutions that expand consumer credit access; and fostering a cultural shift by educating the public on responsible credit usage and encouraging institutions to enhance consumer credit practices."

President Tinubu’s administration remains committed to delivering timely support through this initiative. "Our aim is to assist Nigerians in navigating the current economic challenges," the President’s office remarked in the statement.
