Latest Npower Update: Npower Beneficiaries Plan to Voice Concerns on Channels Television Over 9 to 12 Months of Unpaid Stipends

Adeshina A. Adex, the Publicity Secretary of the National Association of Npower Beneficiaries, has revealed that the association is planning to approach Channels Television to express their grievances regarding the 9 to 12 months of unpaid stipends owed to them by the Federal Government of Nigeria. The association intends to highlight their concerns in a live interview, which, according to estimates, will require ₦200,000 to arrange with the television station.

The association has decided that this sum will be raised internally by its officials. They are not soliciting financial assistance from the public or other Npower beneficiaries. Adex has cautioned members against seeking external funds, as the contributions will be handled within the association.

Npower Batch C beneficiaries have been owed stipends for 9 to 12 months and have tried various means to secure payment, all of which have been unsuccessful. The association is also awaiting the resumption of Dr. Badamasi Lawal, the Chief Executive Officer of the National Social Investment Programmes Agency (NSIPA), as they have already sent him a letter addressing their unpaid stipends. Beneficiaries are hopeful that once Dr. Lawal assumes office, he will act swiftly to resolve the issue by engaging with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to lift the suspension on Npower. The program was suspended in January, causing significant hardship for Batch C beneficiaries who have diligently worked at their assignments for over a year without receiving compensation. Despite their contributions to the economy, these young Nigerians are still awaiting their payments.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) has distributed over N5.09 billion in institutional fees to 59 federal and state tertiary institutions

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFund) has distributed over N5.09 billion in institutional fees to 59 federal and state tertiary institutions, and has launched a nationwide awareness campaign to inform schools about the program.

So far, a total of 45,440 students have benefited from these institutional fees. According to The Guardian, NELFund has visited 10 tertiary institutions, including Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University in Anambra, Federal Polytechnic Nekede in Imo, Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Abia, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology in Ogbomosho, and Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Port Harcourt.

Other institutions included the University of Calabar, Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, University of Port Harcourt, Niger Delta University in Bayelsa, and the Federal University of Petroleum Resources in Delta.

The awareness campaign, conducted in collaboration with the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), is intended to educate both schools and students about the loan scheme, its goals, and how they can benefit from it to improve access to education.

During a visit to the University of Port Harcourt, NELFund Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr emphasized the importance of the loan program in helping Nigerian students overcome financial obstacles to education.

Sawyerr noted that the campaign aims to encourage students who may hesitate to apply due to a lack of information. He explained that the Fund is dedicated to reaching all parts of the country, ensuring that no region is left out. He urged students to take full advantage of the loan, which covers tuition and provides monthly stipends.

Accompanying Sawyerr to UniPort were several Fund officials, including the Executive Director of Operations, Mustapha Iyal; Director of Corporate Communications, Oseyemi Oluwatuyi; Special Assistant to the MD, Nasir Ayitogo; and NANS Senate President, Babatunde Akinteye. Sawyerr reaffirmed the Fund’s commitment to fairly distributing the loan facility.

In response, the university's Vice Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, praised the Federal Government for easing the financial burden on students. He encouraged students to wisely manage the funds provided through the loan scheme.

The Director-General and CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engineer Abisoye Coker-Odusote, announced that 332,715 students have been registered for the federal government’s student loan program

The Director-General and CEO of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Engineer Abisoye Coker-Odusote, announced that 332,715 students have been registered for the federal government’s student loan program, with over 18,000 already receiving payments.

She made this statement in Abuja during an event marking the National Day of Identity, themed “Digital Public Infrastructure – Enabling Access to Services in Nigeria.”

September 16 is designated to raise awareness of the importance of identity for inclusion, protection, and empowerment.

Coker-Odusote emphasized that the federal government’s investment in social and palliative programs, aimed at mitigating the effects of ongoing economic reforms on vulnerable citizens, underscores the relevance of strong digital public infrastructure (DPI) to support these initiatives.

She elaborated on the concept of DPI, highlighting NIMC's role as a key player in facilitating access to public and private services in sectors like finance, healthcare, and agriculture.

DPI, she explained, is a digital network typically built by the public sector to help countries safely and efficiently provide economic opportunities and social services to citizens and legal residents. It enhances financial inclusion and improves citizens' lives by overcoming challenges like physical distance, lack of documentation, and high transaction costs.

Through this initiative, NIMC, which manages the National Identification Number (NIN), has registered over 110 million Nigerians.

“The Student Loan Initiative is a prime example of how DPI can remove financial obstacles to education. By collaborating with 257 institutions, 332,715 students have been enrolled in the loan program, and over 18,000 students have already received financial support,” she stated.

Npower Update: Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs Urges Comrade Kehinde James to Follow Up on Submitted Letter Tomorrow

During a 50-minute interactive session between Npower Publicity Secretary, Adeshina A. Adex, and Eze Ezenwa, owner of the Npower Facebook page, Ezenwa was invited by Adeshina to share his experience as a former Npower Batch A beneficiary. He recounted how Batch A members effectively communicated their concerns about Npower payments. Though Ezenwa noted that Batch C beneficiaries face more severe challenges now, he acknowledged that Batch A also dealt with delays, particularly due to incorrect account details during registration. Ezenwa mentioned that when Sadiya Umar Farouq took over, Batch A beneficiaries experienced further delays in receiving their stipends.

Ezenwa also spoke about Batch A's completion of the one-week NEXIT training and the continued delay in the disbursement of the promised soft loans from the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs. When Adeshina asked what Batch C representatives should focus on regarding payments, Ezenwa suggested pushing for the settlement of 9-12 months of outstanding payments and advocating for Batch C members to be absorbed into government ministries, departments, and agencies. Additionally, they should discuss securing soft loans and grants for exiting Batch C beneficiaries.

On the topic of Npower’s current status, Ezenwa was optimistic, stating that the program is still active, though temporarily suspended, not scrapped. He emphasized that Batch C members will still receive their payments. Adeshina supported this, explaining that the program’s manager, Mr. Akindele, had stepped aside after the appointment of Dr. Badamasi Lawal as the new CEO of the National Social Investment Programmes Agency. Dr. Lawal will assume full duties after his Senate screening on the 24th.

Ezenwa concluded by encouraging Batch C beneficiaries to support officials like Adeshina A. Adex, Comrade Kehinde James, and others, who continue to fight for the release of their stipends. He expressed optimism that Batch C members would receive their payments soon and urged them not to lose hope, as brighter days are ahead.

PCCSIGN Praises Tinubu for Grants to Support Emerging Content Creators

The Practitioners of Content Creators, Skit-Makers, and Influencers Guild of Nigeria (PCCSIGN) has expressed appreciation for President Bola Tinubu’s initiative to provide grants aimed at assisting up-and-coming content creators.

During an interview in Lagos on Monday, the National President of PCCSIGN, Michael Nwabufo, also known as Mike Premium, commended the President for this effort. Nwabufo, who also works as a talent and brand manager, explained that the guild had applied for these government grants to help young influencers expand their streaming platforms.

He revealed that beneficiaries would receive grants ranging from N1 million to N3 million between September and October 2024. "We want to inform upcoming content creators, skit makers, influencers, and models that we have successfully applied for the Federal Government’s financial assistance on their behalf,” said Nwabufo. “The grants will be disbursed this September, with amounts between N1 million and N3 million being deposited directly into recipients’ accounts."

Nwabufo emphasized that the grants would enable young creatives to purchase essential production tools such as cameras, lighting, laptops, and microphones, ultimately helping to strengthen the creative industry. He also noted that PCCSIGN would be collaborating with a bank to assist the creators in opening business accounts for the grant deposits.

To receive updates on the grant disbursement, Nwabufo urged interested parties to visit PCCSIGN’s Instagram page, follow the link in the bio, and register. He stressed that the grants are intended to help content creators grow professionally, not for personal expenditure, recognizing the immense talent among young Nigerian creators.

In addition to the grants, Nwabufo, who serves as an ambassador for the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), announced that he would be covering the costs for 100 emerging artists to register their businesses with the CAC. He also mentioned PCCSIGN’s partnership with the Nigeria Police to ensure content creators are recognized nationwide and protected from wrongful profiling or harassment.

He encouraged content creators and influencers to register on the PCCSIGN website to obtain official ID cards, emphasizing the importance of respecting creators as they play a significant role in the industry. Nwabufo highlighted these initiatives as steps toward nation-building and youth empowerment in Nigeria.

In his commendation of President Tinubu, Nwabufo stated that PCCSIGN had met with the Minister of Industry, Trade, and Investment, Doris Uzoka-Anite, to express gratitude for the government’s ongoing support of the creative sector. The guild also visited Hannatu Musawa, the Minister of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy, praising her efforts to empower creatives and promote the industry.

Nwabufo recognized several Nigerian content creators who have made significant contributions to the field, including Brain Jotter, Oga Sabinus, Mark Angel, Crazeclown, Sydney Talker, Lord Lamba, Billion Prince White, Taaoma, Nasty Blaq, Zfancy, and many others. He also mentioned that Nigeria’s “I-dice” initiative for the creative industry will foster the development of even more talent in skit-making.

Nwabufo concluded by highlighting the impact of empowering content creators, stating that if supported, they could help lift thousands, if not millions, of Nigerians out of poverty due to the nation's high level of creativity. He also hinted at upcoming plans for an award ceremony to honor content creators and influencers, as well as national service delivery awards for public office holders.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has resolved a technical glitch that had hindered students from completing their Bank Verification Number (BVN) verification while applying for loans

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has resolved a technical glitch that had hindered students from completing their Bank Verification Number (BVN) verification while applying for loans. The issue, which occurred over the weekend and during a public holiday, caused delays for several applicants.

In an official statement on NELFUND’s X (formerly Twitter) account, the organization confirmed that the problem had been fixed by Tuesday morning. Students affected by the glitch were advised to return to the portal, finalize their BVN verification, and continue with their loan applications.

"Dear Students,

We are aware that many of you faced difficulties with BVN verification while applying for student loans over the weekend, including the public holiday.

We are happy to report that the issue has been fully resolved as of yesterday morning.

We kindly ask all affected students to log back in, complete the BVN verification, and proceed with the loan application process," the statement read.

NELFUND also expressed appreciation for students' patience during the disruption and assured them that the application process would now continue without further interruptions.

Important Information

The amended Student Loan Act of 2024 aims to break down financial barriers and enhance educational access for Nigerian students, regardless of their financial situation.

NELFUND is primarily funded by a 1% allocation from the revenues generated by the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Nigerian Immigration Service, and Nigerian Customs Service through taxes, levies, and duties.

In August, President Bola Tinubu revealed that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had transferred N50 billion in recovered funds to NELFUND as part of efforts to bolster the student loan program.

Students from across Nigeria have applied for NELFUND loans, with the top 10 states in terms of applications being, in ascending order: Taraba, Yobe, Adamawa, Oyo, Plateau, Kaduna, Katsina, Benue, Borno, and Kano, which had the most applicants.

Since the loan program’s launch, NELFUND has distributed N4.6 billion to students in 59 accredited tertiary institutions nationwide. This includes N2.5 billion disbursed in August and another N2.1 billion allocated to students in 40 institutions earlier in September.

Additionally, in August, NELFUND began providing N20,000 monthly stipends to beneficiaries, with 20,371 students from six tertiary institutions successfully receiving their July payments.

President Bola Tinubu is reportedly considering a significant overhaul of his cabinet, which could involve scrapping the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

President Bola Tinubu is reportedly considering a significant overhaul of his cabinet, which could involve scrapping the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. This is part of a broader initiative aimed at improving government efficiency by consolidating, dividing, or eliminating certain portfolios, according to a source within the Presidency.

In response to mounting pressure to remove underperforming ministers, Tinubu had previously cautioned his cabinet about inadequate performance. However, apart from the suspension of Dr. Betta Edu, the head of the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry, over allegations of financial mismanagement, few changes have been made. To ensure accountability, Tinubu established a Central Delivery Coordination Unit to monitor ministerial performance, signaling that those falling short of expectations may be replaced.

The Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, founded in 2019 to handle social welfare and disaster management, may be disbanded as Tinubu believes its functions are already being carried out by other agencies, rendering the ministry unnecessary. The President’s cabinet reshuffle is expected to be finalized before his trip to the United Nations General Assembly in New York, with several ministries set to be restructured or dissolved.

As the reshuffle nears, reports indicate that ministers have begun seeking support from influential figures to retain their positions. Nonetheless, sources confirm that Tinubu’s decisions will prioritize the nation's best interests.

The Federal Government is set to introduce a consumer credit program and a mortgage scheme

The Federal Government is set to introduce a consumer credit program and a mortgage scheme with low interest rates to alleviate financial pressures on Nigerians.

This was disclosed by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Olawale Edun, during Access Bank’s Corporate Forum in Lagos on Thursday.

Edun announced, “A consumer credit initiative is coming for Nigerians. It will support the manufacturing sector by offering consumers pay-as-you-go options, particularly for durable goods.”

He also emphasized the government's focus on offering near single-digit interest rates for 25-year mortgages to boost the housing and construction sectors.

Furthermore, Edun highlighted the government's partnership with farmers, stating that 60,000 farmers would be provided with necessary inputs, with results expected by early next year.

“The government may not be vocal about its efforts, but a lot is happening behind the scenes for the benefit of Nigerians. By January or February, people will begin to see the results, such as harvests of cassava and other crops,” he said.

He added, “I must stress that everything is being done to fulfill the President’s commitment to supporting vulnerable Nigerians through direct transfers, allowing them to prioritize their needs. As we saw during the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a strong determination to succeed in this area.”

Edun further mentioned a net inflow of $2.35 billion into the Central Bank of Nigeria's (CBN) foreign reserves over the last seven months, which has contributed to the stabilization of the naira.

“This trend has been consistent throughout 2024. We’ve seen relative currency stability and a gradual phasing out of multiple exchange rates. Foreign exchange liquidity has improved, and gross reserves are increasing. There has been a net inflow of around $2.35 billion monthly during the first seven months of the year," Edun explained.

On the fiscal side, Edun highlighted that government revenues are rising but emphasized that the government is not aiming to compete with the private sector in this regard.

Looking forward, Edun projected stronger GDP growth for Nigeria by 2026, targeting a crude oil production increase to two million barrels per day by the end of 2024.

He also mentioned that electricity tariffs for higher usage bands (‘A’ and ‘B’) would remain above 200kWh, telecom tariffs would see a significant rise, and there would be an efficient forex auction system. Additionally, unencumbered foreign reserves would reach $20 billion, inflation would decline to 22 percent, and the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) would be reduced to 20 percent annually.

Economist Bismarck Rewane supported these positive forecasts, predicting 3.5 percent economic growth for Nigeria by 2026, alongside ongoing reforms in tariffs, forex systems, and inflation control.

Roosevelt Ogbonna, Access Bank’s Managing Director, underlined the need for businesses to stay informed about government fiscal policies, saying, “The government remains a major part of our economic landscape.”

Civil Society Groups Rally Against Alleged Plan to Eliminate Humanitarian Affairs Ministry

A coalition of over 300 registered civil society organizations, representing 30 million Nigerians, has voiced opposition to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s rumored plan to abolish the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

The coalition, which includes organizations advocating for persons with disabilities, civil society groups, and other concerned entities, argued that dismantling the ministry would worsen the hardships faced by vulnerable Nigerians.

Reports have surfaced suggesting that President Tinubu may be considering scrapping the ministry and merging various government ministries, departments, and agencies as part of a cabinet reshuffle.

In a joint statement, Ambassador Auwal Ibrahim, Convener of the Coalition of Persons Living with Disabilities; Joy Elizabeth, Spokesperson for the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations; and Comrade Mohammed Abbas, representing the Coalition of Civil Society Organizations in Nigeria, expressed concern that dissolving the ministry would weaken protections for vulnerable populations, aggravate humanitarian crises, and impede efforts to alleviate poverty.

The coalition condemned the proposal as “unacceptable and poorly timed,” urging President Tinubu to reconsider and instead strengthen the ministry. They stressed that the ministry plays a vital role in addressing humanitarian emergencies and supporting social welfare.

“We firmly reject the proposal to scrap the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation and call on President Tinubu to reconsider this decision. Removing the ministry would leave millions of Nigerians vulnerable to poverty, hunger, and despair, further worsening the country’s socio-economic difficulties.”

The coalition pledged to resist any attempt to dismantle the ministry and urged all Nigerians to join them in opposing the plan, demanding that the government prioritize the needs of its most vulnerable citizens. The group reiterated their commitment to advocating for the rights and well-being of disadvantaged Nigerians, pushing for policies that promote social justice and equality.

While President Tinubu recently suspended the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu, no official announcement has been made regarding the potential scrapping of the ministry.

N-Power Beneficiaries Criticize Alleged Plan to Abolish Humanitarian Ministry

The N-Power beneficiaries have criticized the federal government’s reported plan to dissolve the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation.

In a statement signed by Nazifi Mohammed Abubakar, President of the Kano State Chapter of N-Power Beneficiaries, the group expressed serious concerns over the rumored decision, highlighting the ministry’s crucial role in addressing humanitarian crises, alleviating poverty, and promoting social welfare.

Abubakar noted that the creation of the ministry was a strategic move aimed at streamlining and coordinating humanitarian interventions, disaster management, and social welfare programs across the nation. He warned that dissolving the ministry would hinder the government’s ability to tackle Nigeria’s socio-economic issues effectively.

He also emphasized that the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation is one of the few agencies closely connected to ordinary Nigerians and plays a key role in projecting the positive image of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

The group further pointed out that the ministry oversees vital social investment initiatives such as the N-Power program, Conditional Cash Transfers, and the Homegrown School Feeding Programme. Abubakar cautioned that dissolving the ministry would result in poor coordination of these programs, potentially leading to increased corruption and mismanagement within the agencies.

“Nigeria faces numerous challenges, including internal conflicts, natural disasters, and a growing number of internally displaced persons. The ministry is critical in managing these issues, and scrapping it would create a gap that could worsen the situation,” Abubakar explained.

He also stressed that without the ministry as a central coordinating body, corruption and inefficiencies could flourish, further undermining the effectiveness of these vital programs.

“We call on the federal government to rethink this alleged plan and focus on strengthening the ministry’s role in addressing the country’s socio-economic challenges.”

The N-Power beneficiaries also expressed their solidarity with other concerned groups, including civil society organizations and humanitarian experts, who have urged President Tinubu to reconsider any plans to scrap the Ministry.
