The Federal Government has launched a new platform to boost youth participation in the Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) program. Announced by Ayodele Olawande, the Minister of State for Youth Development, on Monday in Abuja, this initiative follows the earlier introduction of 2,000 CNG-powered tricycles by the government on October 1.

According to Olawande, the portal provides a way for young people across the country to register and connect with aggregators or tricycle owners working under the Presidential CNG Initiative (PiCNG), with the potential for participants to eventually become tricycle owners themselves. The portal ensures a transparent system for involving youths in the PiCNG scheme.

Olawande encouraged youths involved in the commercial transport sector, as well as those interested in entering it, to take advantage of this opportunity by signing up. He reiterated that the portal aligns with the government’s commitment to providing equal access to all its initiatives. Youths can visit www.youthcng.ng and www.bci.gov.ng/tricycles to find instructions and details on how to participate.

The minister highlighted that embracing CNG would foster environmental sustainability and reduce the country’s reliance on petrol subsidies. He also noted additional youth-centered programs like the National Youth Investment Fund (NYIF), with ₦110 billion allocated for supporting youth entrepreneurs, and the Student Loans program designed to make education more accessible without financial burden.

Muhammad Hassan, the president of the National Commercial Tricycle and Motorcycle Owners and Riders Association, expressed his organization’s full support for the project, ensuring members will properly use the tricycles and repay loans promptly.

Speaking at the event, Michael Oluwagbemi, CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative (P-CNGi), represented by Tosin Coker, explained that the initiative would strengthen the Nigerian economy by reducing dependence on petrol. He emphasized that CNG is a cleaner, more cost-effective energy option, and its adoption would not only create jobs but also lessen the government’s fuel subsidy expenses.

Npower Payment Update: Expected Timeline for Stipend Disbursement

As reported by Npower News, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation has acknowledged that some beneficiaries have received stipends for three to four months, but the ministry is aware that graduate category beneficiaries are owed eight months while non-graduate category beneficiaries are owed nine months. The Permanent Secretary urged Npower beneficiaries and their association to remain peaceful.

The Permanent Secretary clarified that there is no set date for stipend payments yet, but stated that the issue has been escalated to the relevant departments. Beneficiaries were reassured that payment will begin soon as efforts are underway, and were also advised to ignore fake news regarding the payment.

Meanwhile, the Npower Publicity Secretary urged the Permanent Secretary to expedite the clearance of the nine months' outstanding stipends. The Permanent Secretary mentioned seeing many new representatives, especially from Bauchi State, and praised the association for its proactive efforts. He reiterated that the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy is aware of the payment issue. He further added that the CEO of NSIPA, who recently took office, is also addressing the matter and that he has documents to back his claims.

The Permanent Secretary emphasized that all necessary actions have been taken and urged Npower beneficiaries to remain patient, noting that the National Coordinator is well-informed and actively handling the situation.

The Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN) aims to financially support one million SMEs to foster economic development.

 

At the recently concluded 2024 National Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) conference in Abuja, SMEDAN's Director General, Charles Odii, announced plans to empower over 1 million SMEs with financial assistance and capacity development.

He emphasized SMEDAN's dedication to providing funding and infrastructure to small businesses, stating that they will assess their progress in 12 months. Odii encouraged MSMEs to join cooperatives or clusters, as this will help facilitate the agency’s support. He expressed hope that beneficiaries would utilize the funds effectively to expand their businesses and create more employment opportunities.

Odii also addressed the need for capacity building within the MSMEs ecosystem, noting that many small businesses lack the necessary skills to grow. To tackle this issue, SMEDAN has launched the SME Digital Academy, offering courses on various aspects of business management, including starting with minimal capital, creating business plans, and reaching target markets. These resources aim to equip small businesses with essential skills to succeed.

Furthermore, Odii mentioned the President's N200 billion intervention fund, which allocates N50 billion in grants, providing ₦50,000 each to one million micro-businesses. He believes this financial support will boost small businesses' capacity, enabling them to contribute significantly to the Nigerian economy.
