According to the Nigeria Consumer Credit Corporation, loan disbursements are currently focused on civil servants, with plans to expand to the general public soon.

Nigerian Senate Confirms Dr. Badamasi Lawal as New CEO of NSIPA

 

The Nigerian Senate has officially confirmed Dr. Badamasi Lawal as the new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Social Investment Programme Agency (NSIPA). This significant appointment positions Dr. Lawal at the helm of one of the nation's pivotal social welfare institutions.

The decision to confirm Dr. Lawal followed a thorough process. The Senate Committee on Poverty Alleviation and Social Investments reviewed his qualifications and credentials before submitting their report for consideration. The committee, led by Senator Idiat Oluranti Adebule, affirmed that Dr. Lawal met all the necessary legal requirements for the position, paving the way for his endorsement.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio facilitated the final step in the confirmation process by presenting the nomination to the legislative body for a voice vote. The senators gave their approval, solidifying Dr. Lawal's appointment as the new head of NSIPA.

Dr. Lawal's nomination had earlier been put forward by President Bola Tinubu on August 8, 2024. In a statement issued by Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu's former spokesperson, Dr. Lawal was identified as the ideal candidate to lead the National Social Investment Programme Agency, pending Senate approval. This confirmation marks the culmination of that process.

Dr. Lawal comes into this role with a wealth of experience, having previously served as a commissioner for local government and chieftaincy affairs in Katsina State. His background in governance and public administration makes him a suitable candidate for managing the wide-reaching programs under NSIPA, which are aimed at reducing poverty and improving the lives of millions of Nigerians.

Dr. Lawal will be stepping into the shoes of Halima Shehu, the former CEO of NSIPA, who was suspended by President Tinubu amid allegations of financial misconduct. In the interim period following Shehu’s suspension, Akindele Egbuwalo, the national N-Power programme manager, was appointed by President Tinubu to act as the temporary CEO of NSIPA. Egbuwalo's temporary leadership helped maintain continuity within the agency while investigations into the allegations against Shehu were ongoing.
