Npower News: Npower And Other Social Investment Programmes Resumes

According to Npower News, the Federal Government on Tuesday May 28th, said it had reinstated the suspended social investment programme which includes Npower, revealing the scheme would provide direct payments to 75,000,000 Nigerians in 50,000,000 households to reduce the suffering of citizens, especially vulnerable groups.

The federal government stated that the cash transfer program was overhauled to combat fraud.

According to Npower News, the Minister of Finance and the Coordinating Minister of the Economy,

Wale Edun, announced this at the ministerial sectoral briefing to mark the first year in office of the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration in Abuja.

On January 12, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu suspended all the programs administered by the National Social Investment Programme Agency including Npower for six weeks, as part of an investigation of alleged malfeasance in the management of the agency and the scheme.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu also suspended Betta Edu as the minister for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation on January 8. Betta Edu supervises the operations of the National Social Investment Programmes Agency (NSIPA).

The intervention programs affected include Npower, the conditional cash transfer scheme, the government enterprise and empowerment programme, and the home-grown school feeding initiative.

On March 13, the House of Representatives asked the federal government to resume the implementation of the suspended social investment initiatives.

To revamp the program, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the establishment of a Special Presidential Panel, led by Wale Edun to carry out an intensive review and audit of the existing financial frameworks and policy guidelines of the social investment programs.

Giving an update on the steps taken by the committee at the briefing, the finance minister stated that the government had decided to restart the program to provide succour for poor Nigerians.

Wale Edun said, “I am duty-bound to give you an overview of the strategy, policies, and implementation of Mr President’s reform program. Immediately upon assuming office, Mr President launched macroeconomic reforms to restore stability to the Nigerian economy, including subsidy reforms and foreign exchange market reforms. These reforms caused a spike in costs for individuals and businesses, but Mr President is committed to counterbalancing the negative effects with interventions across the social spectrum.

“The government has restarted the social investment program, providing direct payments to 75 million Nigerians in 50 million households. Access to credit has been improved, with N1bn allocated to consumer credit and grants of 50,000 Naira being given to 1 million nano industries.”

Speaking further, the Wale Edun stated that the federal government had initiated direct payments to contractors, suppliers, and vendors engaged by the government, evidently aiming to curb corruption in business dealings.

Wale Edun explained that this measure would guarantee the prudent and accountable expenditure of the nation’s wealth.

Wale Edun also revealed that the government was set to roll out an Economic Emergency Plan that would be implemented in the next six months. The plan, Wale Edun explained, would help stabilise the economy and set the country on the path of growth.

Wake Edun explained, “A system of payment has been implemented to ensure that Nigeria’s money is spent wisely and accountably. The government has played a role in helping states in attracting cheap funding and processing projects at the community level. Nigeria’s international credit rating has improved, with Moody’s and Fitch increasing and improving Nigeria’s rates to positive.

“The government is committed to counterbalancing the negative effects of economic reforms with interventions across the social spectrum. Infrastructure is key to growing the economy, building employment, and creating multiplier effects throughout the economy. A fund has been set up to provide institutional long-term funds to support housing construction and low-interest mortgages for the average Nigerian and we are working to attract cheap funding for states and process projects at the community level.”

Wale Edun added, “And as it was mentioned earlier, the pivot thing to CNG is a government policy not just for vehicles but for generators. They have to be either CNG-fueled or solar-based or electric vehicles.

“That is the new incentive structure. And it continues also in the oil and gas sector. There has just been a new set of incentives that are encouraging new investments. We expect $7bn worth of investment that has been sitting on the sideline to now come; similarly, in other sectors.

“A stable, growing economy attracts investment that increases productivity, grows the economy further, creates jobs and reduces poverty. That is the trajectory that Nigeria is now on.”

Npower News Today Monday May 27th 2024

According to Npower News today Monday May 27th 2024, the credibility of the statements made by the Npower national coordinator is being questioned with respect to Npower payment of beneficiaries, beneficiaries of Npower have observed that instead of the Npower coordinator to focus on Npower payment news and issues regarding Npower, the National Coordinator of Npower is currently busy attending to and dishing out informations on how to mine bitcoins and other schemes that are unrelated to Npower payment.

According to Npower News, beneficiaries of Npower are advised to capitalize on the recent federal government initiatives such as the federal government grant, federal government loan, consumer credit scheme, student loan and other programs instead of solely relying on when the Npower payment will start and when the suspension of Npower will be lifted. Npower suspension will be lifted this month according to the Npower coordinator but of recent there has been no information regarding the resumption of Npower and nothing has been said regarding the investigation of Betta Edu.

Npower News will continue to update beneficiaries of happenings with respect to Npower and other federal government initiatives as they unfold. Npower beneficiaries should continue to remain optimistic and always get their information from reliable sources. Npower have continued to always emphasize that Npower payment depends on the investigation between EFCC and Betta Edu, Npower suspension cannot be lifted and Npower payment cannot be made when there is a pending investigation in the Ministry for Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Npower will only resume after all investigations linked to Betta Edu and the ministry has been concluded.

Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) Opposes Student Loan

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Calabar Zone, has kicked against the proposed student loan.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), described the student loan as not only “strangulating” but has the capacity of subjecting the benefiting students to slavery, perpetual debt, depression and eventual suicide.

Addressing a press conference in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State capital on Monday, the Zonal Cordinator of ASUU, Happiness Uduk flanked by all the Chapter Chairmen of the zone said it was disheartening that the people who attended schools on scholarship, enjoyed meal subsidies, bursary awards among others were the ones making some of these obnoxious policies saying that the union would not relent in opposing such policies.

Happiness Uduk in a statement jointly signed by the eight union Chairpersons reasoned that instead of giving student loan, the Federal Government could use the money for interventions in higher institutions saying that such would bring about positive turnaround of events that would make the institutions independent with highly subsidized tertiary education in the country.

According to Happiness Uduk, “It is disheartening that people who attended schools on scholarship, enjoyed meal subsidies, free laundry services and bursary awards are the same running our economy today. Their Children are on scholarship in the best foreign universities in the world but after siphoning our economy, they turn around to impose a strangulating Education Loan in tax payers’ children so that they will be enslaved and remain indebted to the country forever. They do not mind the devastating effect of this scheme on the country, such as depression, suicide, and collosal loss of intellectuals.

“To this end, we vehemently condemn the idea of Education Loan and state clearly that using the money for intervention in higher Institutions will be about a positive turn-around of events that will make our institutions self reliant on highly subsidized tertiary education in Nigeria.”

The union also called on the federal government to come to a renegotiation table and reconvene a committee to review the agreement reached by ASUU leadership and Proffesor Nimi Brigs-led Government committee with the view of adjusting the document according to the current economic realities so as to have acceptable salary structure for university lecturers.

The Academic Staff Union also condemned the indiscriminate proliferations of universities in Nigeria without adequate funding by both the Federal and state governments, noting that 2020 ASUU-FGN Memorandum of Action (MoA), which stressed the need to review the NUC Act to make it more potent in arresting the reckless and excessive establishment of universities, should be fully implemented.

“We urge the President Tinubu-led administration to refrain from further proliferation of universities and rather consolidate on the already existing ones. What we need are universities that are adequately equipped and empowered to address the challenges confronting Nigeria, not glorified schools,” the statement added.

On the ongoing minimum wage negotiation, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Calabar Zone urged the federal government to immediately deploy the instrumentality of collective bargaining to conclude the social dialogue, saying that such would lessen the invasive decline in the socio-economic lives of Nigerians.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), further urged federal, state and local governments to take a critical look at all unworkable policies and programmes sponsored by international money lenders such as the World Bank and IMF with a view to reclaiming the country’s sovereignty and restoring the confidence of Nigerians.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), however, advised governments and her agencies to read the Act establishing universities and stop interfering and threatening the autonomy of the universities, especially in terms of policy, academic planning and administration, even as it advised that suspended members in Ebonyi State University be recalled in obedience to the declarations and orders of the National Industrial Court of Nigeria.

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), added that outstanding salaries of academics in all institutions should be paid without further delay, noting that failure to accede to their demands would make them embark on industrial action, even as it regretted that it resorted to strike to press home its demands as that was the only language the government understood.
