Student Loan: Some Federal Institution Have Not Uploaded Data On The Student Loan Application Portal

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund, NELFUND,  have revealed that some federal institutions have not uploaded their students' data on the student loan application portal despite the fact that the student loan portal has officially been launched for students to apply for the student loan.

NELFUND has expressed deep regrets that this development has been preventing the processing of the student loan application from the affected schools.

NELFUND has appealed to this federal institutions of which students are beneficiaries in the ongoing first phase of the student loan to respond appropriately.

The spokesman of NELFUND, Nasir Ayitogo,in a phone conversation with a well known news publisher in Abuja, Sunday, said the fund was encountering problems processing student loan requests from students whose institutions were yet to make data of their institutions available.

Nasir Ayitogo, however, refused to name the institutions that are yet to upload their data on the the student loan application portal of NELFUND.

“We have received a lot of loan requests from students across the country. However, some institutions have not uploaded their students’ data on the NELFUND dashboard to enable us process the requests,” Nasir Ayitogo said.

Nasir Ayitogo, however, expressed optimism that more institutions will upload the data of their students on the student loan portal in the coming days.

Recall that the Nigeria student loan scheme launched the student loan for its first phase of student loan programme, Friday.

Recall also that the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, had on Friday, called out some institutions for their slow response to upload data of their students on the Fund’s database.

This, it lamented, would prevent the student loan application of students in the affected institutions.

NANS President, Lucky Emonefe made the allegation in a memo to all Student Union Government, SUG presidents, chairmen of NANS Joint Campus Council as well as zonal coordinators of the association.

Lucky Emonefe called on the student leaders to prevail on the respective management of their institutions to comply with NELFUND directives, pointing out that any tertiary institution that fails to submit their students’ data to the Fund, would be excluded from accessing the student loan.

Dated May 23, 2023 wiith reference number NANS/VOL1/GA1/A150, the correspondence was titled, ‘Urgent notice from NELFUND to all students leaders and school managements’.

The memo read:”Following a meeting with the management of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), we have been made aware that several Federal Universities are yet to submit their students’ data. This is hindering the processing of the Students’ Loan scheme in various ways.

“NELFUND management has hereby requested that the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) urge the Vice Chancellors of these Federal Universities to comply with NELFUND’s directives and promptly submit their students’ data for upload on the NELFUND platform. This will enable the loan processing to commence as soon as possible.

“Please note that any Federal University that fails to submit their data may be excluded from accessing the loan, and NELFUND will not be held responsible.

“We urge all Student Union Presidents and other student leaders, particularly those from Federal Universities, to ensure that their school managements have submitted the necessary data to NELFUND. This will guarantee that no university is left out of the Students’ Loan scheme”.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), the administrator of the student loan, revealed this in its “frequently asked” questions, which were posted on its official X handle on Friday.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) said student loan applications by citizens “convicted of fraud and forgery, drug offences, cultism, felony, or any offences involving dishonesty” would be declined.

Others whose student loan application would be declined include anyone “proven to have defaulted in respect of any previous loan granted” by any licensed financial institution and anyone “found guilty of submitting fake/fraudulent documents and dismissed for exam malpractices by any school authority.”

On Friday, The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) launched the student loan application portal for the first phase of the student loan scheme, which is open to students from federal institutions across the country.

Student Loan Portal Issues As Students Struggle To Register On Student Loan Portal

A surge of frustration has gripped some tertiary institution students as they struggled to navigate and register on the newly launched student loan portal.

Information gathered is that the student loan portal is now open for applications from students across 126 federal institutions, covering Federal universities, Federal Polytechnics and Federal Colleges of Education.

To apply for the student loan, students need to visit the official student loan portal, nelf.gov.ng, fill out the necessary forms, and submit required documentation.

However, the mounting issues hindering smooth student loan applications were prompting calls for immediate improvements to the portal to ensure that students can secure the financial support they needed for their education.

It would be recalled that the first phase of the student loan scheme has gone live in early hours of Friday, with the first prospective beneficiaries being students from federal institutions across the country.

Reports have it that the student loan portal is now active, but some students have complained about their inability to log onto the student loan portal and proceed with their student loan application process.

In an interview with our correspondent, a student of Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, who identified hisself as Cletus said his JAMB registration number was “not recognised” while attempting to register.

“It’s not working. I got to where I clicked ‘create’. The image or whatever is not showing. So it’s preventing me. Infact they really need to work on the website,” Cletus added.

Meanwhile, some Direct Entry (DE) and National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) students have complained that they cannot proceed with the student loan application as the student loan portal required them to provide their JAMB registration numbers.

A student of NOUN, Ms.Gloria, said she opened the student loan portal but did not know what to do next when she was asked to provide JAMB registration number.

“National Open University don’t use JAMB, so I urge NELFUND to use our admission numbers instead of our JAMB numbers,” Ms.Gloria, pleaded.

How To Fix Some Issues On The Student Loan Portal

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has addressed recent complaints from some students who are encountering some issues when attempting to apply on the student loan portal.

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has addressed these issues on the student loan portal collectively as follows:

A) If a student’s school is not on the list of institutions, NELFUND has advised that the ICT department of the respective school, be contacted to reach out to NELFUND.

B) If a student’s JAMB number is not verifying, the student is instructed to contact his/her school to ensure their admission was supported by JAMB.

C) For students from state-owned institutions trying to apply for the student loan, NELFUND has explained that the rollout phase started only with federal institutions and therefore these students are advised to hold on for now.

D) If students cannot see any institution in the dropdown list, NELFUND suggests checking the internet connection and refreshing the browser.

E) If students are unable to verify their account via email, they are instructed to ensure that they entered the correct email address.

Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) To Disburse Student Loan Within 30 Days Of Approval

Applicants for the student loan will have their student loan disbursed within 30 days of approval of successful applications.

This is even as the much awaited student loan scheme started yesterday.

The student loan website (www.nelf.gov.ng), which went live at yesterday, is expected to benefit 1,200,000 students from Federal Government-owned universities, polytechnics, colleges of education and technical colleges in the first phase of the student loan scheme, while those of state-owned tertiary institutions will be announced soon.

The development comes as the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has accused “several tertiary institutions” of failing to submit information of students to NELFUND to enable them apply for the student loan.

In a Frequently Asked Questions posted on the NELFUND official X handle yesterday, it was disclosed that part-time students and Direct Entry students without JAMB Numbers are ineligible to apply for the student loan.

While disclosing that the zero interest loan is open to new and existing full-time students in tertiary institutions, the agency said applicants for the student loan are required to input specific personal details that include name of institution of study, admission number, JAMB Number, Date of Birth, National Identity Number (NIN) as well as Bank Verification Number (BVN).

Applicants for the student loan are also expected to upload scanned admission letters for new students as well as student identification cards.

The new agency also clarified that no fee is required before the disbursements of the student loan.

“All full-time students are eligible for the loan but only applicants will benefit from the loan.

“NELFUND will disburse within 30 days of approval of successful applications,” it said.

On how the student loan repayment process works, NELFUND said: “Ten per cent of the beneficiary’s salary will be deducted at source by the employer. Self-employed beneficiaries are required to remit 10 per cent of their monthly profit to the Fund.

“You are at liberty to seek to repay beyond the statutory 10 per cent monthly repayment by your employers/by self if you are self-employed.”

At a Pre-Application Sensitisation Press Conference in Abuja on Monday, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Fund, Akintinde Sawyerr, had disclosed that one of the key features of the student loan is absence of physical contact between the student loan applicant and the Fund.

According to Akintinde Sawyerr, the student loan portal provides a user-friendly interface for students to submit their student loan applications conveniently.

Akintinde Sawyerr said only students whose institutions have completed and uploaded their students’ information on the student loan website would be eligible to apply for the student loan.

Akintinde Sawyerr, however, refused to reveal the number of institutions yet to submit students’ information, insisting that he would not engage in naming and shaming.

Meanwhile, the NANS has accused ‘several tertiary institutions’ of failing to submit information of students to NELFUND to enable them (students) apply for the student loan.

NANS President, Lucky Emonefe, made the allegation in a memo to all Students’ Union Government (SUG) Presidents, Chairmen of NANS Joint Campus Council as well as Zonal Coordinators of the association.

Lucky Emonefe called on the students’ leaders to prevail on the respective management of their institutions to comply with NELFUND directives, pointing out that any tertiary institution that fails to submit their students’ data to the Fund would be excluded from accessing the student loan.

Lucky Emonefe said: “Following a meeting with the management of NELFUND, we have been made aware that several federal universities are yet to submit their students’ data. This is hindering the processing of the Students’ Loan scheme in various ways.

“NELFUND management has hereby requested that the NANS urge the Vice Chancellors of these federal universities to comply with NELFUND’s directives and promptly submit their students’ data for upload on the NELFUND platform. This will enable the loan processing to commence as soon as possible.

“Please note that any federal university that fails to submit its data may be excluded from accessing the loan and NELFUND will not be held responsible.

“We urge all students’ union presidents and other student leaders, particularly those from federal universities to ensure that their school managements have submitted the necessary data to NELFUND. This will guarantee that no university is left out of the Students’ Loan scheme.”
